Leading what is considered a healthy lifestyle can be difficult at times. Busy schedules can easily compromise any habits that you want to establish. So how can you better your style of living while juggling work, a social life, and your own needs? Over the years I have followed a few best practices that help me stay balanced.
These are simple guidelines that don’t require spending hours at the gym and only drinking kale smoothies to feel healthy! My list of healthy lifestyle tips is about making simple changes in your day-to-day living. By slowly incorporating these small adjustments into your routine, your overall wellness will improve significantly.
Decreasing your intake of sugar & processed foods will boost your energy, clear up your skin, and help you lose weight. Try to eat whole foods in their most natural state: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and healthy fats (like avocados!). When shopping, you can start by avoiding anything that has high-fructose corn syrup, added sugars, or artificial colors/ flavorings.
An easy way to start incorporating this practice is to meal – plan and prep for the week. Write down all of the snacks and recipes you will eat so that your grocery store trips are easy and organized. Also, check out some of my favorite healthy recipes here:
Find Solace in Self-Care
Each week, you should have a day solely dedicated to personal care. This means taking care of your skin, relaxing your body, and/ or improving mental clarity. You won’t believe the difference a proper day of focusing on yourself can make! It helps you maintain a positive attitude, increases self-confidence, and puts your needs into perspective.
That being said, every person’s needs are different. Your self-care day could include a face mask, epsom salt bath, and a movie. While others feel best reading in the sunshine and sipping on sparkling water. Do you, just do it for the right reasons.
Keeping an agenda has proven to be useful for most people looking to add a little more structure to their lives. Use a weekly planner to input the key aspects of your day- including work shifts, social events, and workout times. This will keep you motivated to stick to a semi-rigid routine and will surprisingly clear up a lot more free time in your days. You can use this time to focus on doing something beneficial like meal-prepping, studying, gardening, etc..
Get that Vitamin D!! Getting at least 20-30 minutes of sunshine every day is ideal for supporting bone growth and immune function. It is also a great way to help reduce stress and boost your mood. In order to get the proper intake of sun, you must have a few minutes of unprotected exposure (AKA no sunscreen). This time limit is about a third of how long it takes for you to burn. Saying this, you MUST put sunscreen on if you are going to be outside for an extended amount of time! This is how to maintain your skin’s elasticity and an even tone.
Keep it Natural
It is extremely important to monitor what you are putting in your body AND on it. Our skin comes in contact with so many different chemicals and materials that can be absorbed. This is why I suggest trying to convert your cleaning and beauty products to be as natural & eco-friendly as possible. You will be doing yourself and the environment a favor by purchasing environmentally-friendly products or by making your own. If you need suggestions, below are a few of my favorite DIY products:
Taking vitamins and powders can help enhance the wellness routine that you have created for yourself. To be very clear, taking supplements will not make you healthy on their own. They must be combined with a healthy diet and exercise to yield the best results! If you are trying supplements for the first time, a good option would be to start with a multivitamin and then to establish a routine of taking them everyday.
Once you have developed a healthy habit for supplements, do a little research and find out which nutritional vitamins you think will benefit you the most. For example, omega-3 fatty acids like fish oil is beneficial for heart health, evening primrose oil is great for women’s hormones and skin health, and taking a probiotic will help support the gut.
Research has shown that daily movement is a necessity for overall health! Start increasing the amount of activity in your day: use the stairs more often, do squats at your desk, or go on a midday walk. Also, make sure to switch things up and to work out different parts of your body. Don’t overkill with the cardio – give each section of your body a proper workout every week!
One of the easiest ways to stay active is picking an exercise / sport that you enjoy! Don’t think of working out as a box on your “healthy checklist”. Find something that truly entertains you and keeps you moving at the same time. That is why variation can be key – the more exercises you try, the less monotonous your routine will be!
