We’ve all been there: waking up with a heavy head, and feeling nauseous with no energy. Or at least most of us have been there… You would think that by now there would be a quick cure for the dreaded hangover! So what can we do? Luckily for you I have done the research and found a few simple, natural remedies that will speed up your recovery, rehydrate your body, and help replenish the essential vitamins you lost the night before. THE NIGHT BEFORE
Have you ever heard of the The 1 to 1 Rule? It is a pretty simple task: make sure to down a glass of water for every alcoholic drink you have. This will help you maintain your daily water consumption AND will increase your chances of avoiding a hangover because it balances out the sugar in most alcoholic drinks.
When ordering drinks, try to stay away from sugar! Also, any clear alcohol is best for preventing a hangover the next day (vodka + tequila are the cleanest options). Ask for your drinks to be skinny (no sugar/syrup/agave) or stick to a simple soda mixer with fresh lemon/lime/grapefruit.
My favorite drink to order is a vodka soda with muddled mint and a squeeze of lime juice–it is so refreshing and clean!
This tip has always worked wonders for me: taking 1-2 activated charcoal supplements and drinking an entire glass of water (or coconut water if you prefer) before you go to sleep. Activated charcoal is so great for detoxing your body: it literally binds to toxins in your stomach so they can’t be absorbed into the bloodstream.
The key to this trick is to take the charcoal right when you get home! Using it the day after won’t have any effect because the alcohol will have already been absorbed into your body.
THE MORNING OF
Don’t let a hangover ruin a perfectly good day! Try to get outside, meet up with friends to take a walk, or make plans. The fresh air and movement is guaranteed to start making you feel like a real human again. Another hangover cure option is to try and sweat it out. By no means should you tackle an hour gym sesh or mile run. But sitting in the sauna for 20 minutes or doing some light exercise will help your body start the detox it needs.
Use Essential Oils
The NOW essential oils brand is one of the best! They sell 100% pure, vegan oils that are naturally sourced and safe to use. Their Grapefruit essential oil is a favorite for hangover cures because its energizing aroma is the perfect way to naturally wake up in the morning when you feel a little groggy. The Peppermint essential oil also has an incredibly fresh scent that will help decrease feelings of nausea and maintain your focus.
My favorite ways to use these oils: Put two drops of the grapefruit oil on a warm, damp cloth and take deep breaths while wiping your face. For the peppermint oil, put a few drops into your tea or apply two drops directly to the back of your neck (dilute it in one teaspoon of coconut oil).
It can be so tempting to eat a bunch of greasy food to try and squelch your hangover. This theory is something I have always heard about and even tried on multiple occasions. But guess what? It doesn’t really work.Try eating foods with good fats and high fiber counts. Eggs, multigrain toast, avocado, even dark chocolate can work! If you aren’t feeling too hungry, a smoothie is efficient with making you feel healthier.
My go-to smoothie: avocado, banana, dates, coconut water, and flax seeds. The coconut water is rich in electrolytes, while the banana and other ingredients are full of potassium as well as antioxidant properties.
