As a result of everyday activities: your home, car, or office can begin to smell less than fresh sometimes. One of the best ways to eliminate any odors is the quick use of a spray. Artificially scented air fresheners are not the most ideal solution for this because of the toxins used during the manufacturing process. Also, these ingredients are known to only mask smell instead of eliminating odors completely. This is one of the reasons why I started to make my own air freshener spray with safe ingredients.
Below is a list of materials to make a natural air freshener for any space. I have also included the oil blends I recommend that are both cleansing and fragrant. Inhaling these essential oils instead of chemicals can result in a more positive mood and mindset!
- 8-ounce spray bottle
- 1 cup of distilled water
- 2 tablespoons witch hazel (I use Thayer’s)
- 15 drops of your chosen essential oils
- OPTIONAL: basil leaves, rosemary sprigs, cinnamon sticks, orange peels, etc.
Suggested Oil Blends
- lemon – basil
- grapefruit – chamomile – cedarwood
- orange – peppermint
- rose – vanilla – lime
- lavender – lemon – rosemary
- Choose your oil blend (and get creative with the optional add-ons)!
- Mix the ingredients listed above into the spray bottle.
- Shake well.
The oils I selected are mainly citrus or earth scents because of the invigorating and antibacterial properties. This easy-to-make air freshener is a great addition to your cleaning tools. It is harmless, organic, and will have any space smelling naturally fresh in no-time.
