Atlanta, Georgia is the perfect city to visit during the fall season. The weather is ideal for outdoor activities, the food is inspired and the drinks are stronger. This city is known to host many autumn festivals, markets and other enjoyable neighborhood events. I attended many of these happenings over the years and have compiled a list of my favorites for any fellow fall fanatics!
Light Up the BeltLine
Join the Atlanta BeltLine Lantern Parade with almost 70,000 other attendees to observe eclectic creations and spectacular light displays! Those walking in the parade are encouraged to bring their own lantern. If you aren’t feeling crafty, just pick any spot on the trail – I suggest visiting one of the many rooftop bars for the best views and the most delicious drinks! This free event is an extension of the Old Fourth Ward Fall Festival that is held from 11 am to 11 pm that same day. It is guaranteed to be a wonderful time spent with family and friends.
Go Apple Picking in Blue Ridge
Take a day and visit a family-owned apple orchard located in Blue Ridge, Georgia. Mercier Orchards has been around for 75 years and holds events year-round. The best time to visit is in Autumn, when their apples are ready to be picked. Make sure to check their website starting in September, because the apple U-Pick schedule varies every year depending on the harvest. When you go, visit their market store and bakery– you can purchase delights that are made from the produce grown on the farm. Do yourself a favor and order a couple of their signature fried pies!
Experience the Tastes of Atlanta
The culinary experts of Atlanta worked hard to put this city on the map as a foodie-destination and they succeeded. They have used locally-sourced products to create a culture for the lovers of all things edible. Five-star restaurants, farmers markets, food trucks and tasting events have become staples for the locals. The most popular one of all, the Taste of Atlanta, showcases creative dishes and beverage creations from 90 of the community’s best restaurants. Buy a ticket and get ready to stuff yourself silly at the largest outdoor, 3-day food festival that Georgia has to offer!
Watch a Wacky March
I consider this to be the must-see Halloween event in town. The Little Five Points Halloween Parade features an artist market, food & drink tents and live music. The parade itself is a wide display of heavily decorated floats and inventive costumes. Dressing up is encouraged- the spookier the better! Once the march is over, you can wander through the intriguing area of Little Five Points to visit the funky stores and dive bars. Don’t miss out on the most entertaining block party of the season.
Test the Local Brews
A beer-lovers paradise! On the third weekend of October, the charming square in downtown Decatur becomes the perfect setting for the ultimate beer tasting experience. The Decatur Craft Beer Festival is a 20-year old event that lasts for 5 hours, has live music, food tents and unlimited samples from over 80 Georgia-based breweries.
Use these suggestions for your next Autumn adventure and learn to appreciate all that Atlanta has to offer! Taste local food, enjoy the outdoors and celebrate the culture of this diverse city. These events are the perfect way to kick-start the holiday season.
